Getting there, however, took a little doing. This book is an origin story and when the last page is done, you want more. You root for the good guys and you feel their pain when things don’t necessarily go their way. By the end of the novel, there was an interesting world of magic that you are introduced to and you want to know more about how everything works. The stage was set and the characters were fun to read. We quickly meet her best friend and uber pop-culture nerd Maggie, and a mysterious bad boy Ty. When we first meet Lainey she’s an overachieving high school student bent on early graduation. Here witches are treated as simply women who can wield magic instead of the grotesque, wart ridden ghouls that we have seen before.

Keeper follows the story of Lainey Styles after she has an encounter with a 200-year-old witch. Keeper is the debut novel for Kim Chance and recently came available January 30th.
